Safer Schools NI – Digital Proficiency Course

The Digital Proficiency Courses offer an accessible and engaging way for pupils, parents/carers, and professionals to gain the knowledge and confidence needed to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. Developed by online safety experts at INEQE Safeguarding Group, incorporating Safer Schools NI, these courses support safer digital experiences across the school community.

About the Courses

Delivered through the Safer Schools NI Mobile or Web App, users complete short, video‑based modules led by experienced presenters. Each lesson explores key aspects of online life using practical, relatable examples.

At the end of each course:

  • Young pupils complete a class quiz

  • Older pupils, parents/carers, and professionals complete a proficiency test

This helps ensure that essential knowledge has been understood and retained.

Topics include:

  • Age restrictions

  • Grooming and exploitation

  • Online bullying

  • Artificial intelligence

  • Digital behaviour and wellbeing

Why Digital Proficiency Matters

Digital proficiency is vital for everyone in the school community. It equips pupils—and the adults who care for them—with the understanding they need to use technology confidently and safely.

These foundational courses support:

  • Safer decision-making

  • Responsible online behaviour

  • Awareness of risks and how to respond

  • Knowing where to seek help online and offline

By developing these skills early, we empower users to benefit from digital opportunities while reducing potential harm.
